The speakers of the ISU have presented current issues on the topic "Cutting Edge Services - Tipping the Scale for Exhibition Success" in lectures and interactive workshops.

Philip Borbély

Managing Director MMC Studios Köln GmbH

Before 2005, Philip Borbély worked in management and consulting. He than began accompanying private equity investors throughout Germany and Europe, developing and optimizing companies' productivity and growth. Since 2005, he has been Managing Director to several companies and, in 2013, he became Managing Director of MMC Studios in Cologne. Since 2013, MMC is performing very successfully in the TV-Show business and is experiencing large growth in fiction formats. Philip Borbély holds an Executive MBA with a focus on Mergers & Acquisitions.


Stefan Eckert

Senior Vice President Services Koelnmesse GmbH

As a member of the management board of Koelnmesse GmbH, Dr. Eckert is responsible for exhibitor services. Since 2004, he managed Koelnmesse Service GmbH leading the company to a strong growth in the service business. After completing his studies in Germany, France, the U.S. and Switzerland, Dr. Eckert worked for L.E.K. Consulting in Sydney, Australia and Deutsche Bahn AG in Germany before joining Koelnmesse in 2004.



Mariane Ewbank

Chairwoman IELA International Exhibition Logistics Association

Mariane Ewbank; IELA’s Chairwoman, is the director of Fulstandig Shows e Eventos, a full- service transportation and logistics contractor in Brazil. She was employed in the events marketplace for a number of years as an exhibitor, after which she moved over to the organizer side of the industry and managed shows and conferences for another 10 years. Her experiences in the exhibitors’ and organizers’ fields have been tremendous assets in developing and managing Fulstandig where her main focus now is concentrating on the needs and successes of her exhibition clients.  Mariane has been elected as Chairwoman of IELA in 2016 and Chair of the Standards and Customs working group of IELA since 2012.

Holger Friesz

Director Enterprise Sales EMEA, Ungerboeck Systems International GmbH

Holger Friesz is an experienced international digital native, who has been working for more than 17 years in the IT industry, where he served in various roles, such as Change Manager, Product Manager and Client Relationship Manager, Care, Sales Consulting and Partner Management. As Holger is known for being passionate about costumer satisfaction, he truly believes in effective communication, collaboration and processes and is an expert in business analysis among those topics. He holds a Diploma in Business Administration and Information Systems as well as a Bachelor of Arts and is responsible for Sales in Europe, Middle East and Africa for Ungerboeck Software International. In addition to his role in the event industry, he also serves as a lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University. Ungerboeck Software provides event management solutions for more than 30 years and has an international costumer base of renowned venues, exhibitions and conference organizers.

Andreas Gruchow

Member of the Managing Board Deutsche Messe AG and President UFI - The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry

Since 1st April 2008, Dr. Andreas Gruchow is member of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe AG, Hannover after he has worked for several companies as International Subsidiaries and M&A, Global Fairs & Global Sales & New Formats, DOMOTEX, LIGNA, INTERSCHUTZ, Labvolution, didacta and SODEX. In 1993 he has received a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hannover before he became Head of "EXPO 2000" department at the Deutsche Messe AG. From 2000 to 2008, he was Senior Vice President International Trade Fairs at the Deutsche Messe AG and joined the Board of EMECA in 2008 as well as the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of UFI in 2011. Recently Dr. Andreas Gruchow was elected to be President of UFI.

Gunnar Heinrich


After several years in management positions at consulting companies and global exhibition organizers Gunnar was co-founder of adventics, a management consultancy and service provider dedicated to "Innovation for the Exhibition Industry". Together with his experienced adventics colleagues he is working exclusively for the international exhibition industry. With his international track record in the areas of CRM, Visitor Value and Innovation Management he helps CEOs of global organizers to achieve their growth targets, drive the change towards a customer centric organization and manage the implementation of a successful digital business.


Melanie Heinrich

International Architect in the Trade Fair Business

Melanie Heinrich has been involved in broad range of activities in the trade fair business since 2002. She started with sales and marketing consulting which encompassed event and exhibition organization and management. She has a long history of directing projects for an exhibition company. And equally for a number of years had responsibility for organizing trade fair participation on behalf of the German Federal Ministries BMWi and BMEL.                                 From 2012, she has worked at an achitectual practice where she assumed responsibility for project management of trade fair participation including the technical planning for the events. From the start of 2017 she has been operating as a freelance consultant specializing in the entire global planning of events ranging from technical plans to managing their implementation on site.

Jens Hogreve

Full Professor, Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt 

Jens Hogreve (Ph.D., University of Hagen) is Professor of Service Management at the Ingolstadt School of Management, Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt. He is Visiting Professor at the Université Toulouse 1 Capitole and was Visiting Scholar at the Florida State University, Tallahassee, in 2015/2016. He studied Economics at the Universities of Bonn and Mannheim, where he graduated in 2002. His current research focuses on customer coproduction, service recovery management, B2B-services, return on service management initiatives, and transformative services. His research has been published in the International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Retailing, and Journal of Service Research, among others. He has provided consulting and worked on collaborative research projects with firms in various industries including audi, Deutsche Bahn, Emnos, Generali Versicherungen, Media Saturn Holding, REWE Group, Siemens, Siemens Healthineers.    

Florian Kraus

Professor of Marketing, University of Mannheim, Chair of Sales and Services Marketing 

Florian Kraus is Professor of Marketing at the University of Mannheim (Germany). Professor Kraus’ current research focuses on frontline employees’ behavior and performance as well as Key Account Management in the context of services marketing. Professor Kraus’ work appeared in premier international journals like the Journal of Marketing, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Service Research, Journal of Retailing and others. Prior to joining the University of Mannheim he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Ruhr-University in Bochum. Florian Kraus obtained his Ph.D. from the Philipps University in Marburg and held a research position at the University of Houston. Prof. Dr. Florian Kraus has substantial experience conducting marketing research with companies in the B2B and B2C sector. He is Editorial Board member of the Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management as well as the British Journal of Management. 

Arne Ludwig

Chief Sales Officer headtrip immersive media GmbH / President First German Business Association For Immersive Media/EDFVR 

Arne Ludwig is Chief Sales Officer at headtrip Immersive Media GmbH in Cologne/Germany. Headtrip is one of the leading producers of immersive media in Germany. From the first concept to production and programming up to the finished product, headtrip acts as service provider and sparring partner for all the themes in virtual reality, 360-degree production and augmented reality. Arne is a VR evangelist and currently president of the First German Business Association For Immersive Media. The EDFVR has more than 100 active members and partnerships with German VR companies, Universities and Institutions. Arne has co-curated the HANDS ON VR exhibition in Berlin for #re:publica TEN in May 2016, partnered with the Digility 2016 and has moderated panels and held Keynotes at ArtsPLus/Bookfair Frankfurt as well as Medientage München. 

Birgit Mager

Professor for Service Design TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences and President Service Design Network

Since 1995 Birgit Mager holds the first European professorship on "Service Design" at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, Germany and since then has developed the field of Service Design constantly in theory, methodology and in practice. Her numerous lectures, her publications and her projects have strongly supported the implementation of a new understanding of the economical, ecological and social function of design in the domain of services. Birgit Mager is Co-Founder and President of the International Service Design Network, editor in chief of Touchpoint, the international Journal of Service Design, founder and manager of sedes|research, the Center for Service Design Research at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. She is also member of numerous boards and juries. 

Nico Nauen

Vice President UPS Europe SPRL/BVBA

Nico Nauen, currently Vice President UPS Europe, started his career with an apprenticeship in the banking sector. Subsequently, he studied Business Administration in his hometown Hamburg. In 2004, he joined UPS. In 2010, he was promoted to Director Business Development responsible for East- and Southeast Europe. From 2012 to 2015, he was member of the executive board of UPS Germany overseeing sales. Becoming Vice President UPS Europe in 2015, he is currently responsible for sales in the segments High Tech and Retail in all Europe.

Rudolf Sommer

Vice President Germany  UNICEO, United Networks Of International Corporate Event Organizers

University studies of economics and business administration at the Bundeswehr University in Munich and several projects in market research for the automotive and health care sector affected the decision to focus on so called 3D-brand communication. Since the deregulation of the energy market in Germany, Rudolf Sommer is responsible for the positioning of new created EnBW corporate brands (such as Yello Strom, NaturEnergie, Watt GmbH…) on national and international communication platforms, customer events and sales promotions. International renowned awards like the if-Design Award, dp3d, die goldene Flamme, EVA in silver or a nomination for the German Design Award are a confirmation for his successful new way for 3D-brand communication in a no-interest market-segment for electricity and energy services. Since 2016 Vice President of the International Network of Corporate Event Organizers (UNICEO) in Germany.

Ulrich Stiller

Director Marketing & Sales, Cologne Bonn Airport

Ulrich Stiller is Director Marketing & Sales of Cologne Bonn Airport. The 52-year old business studies graduate has this position since 2002. Prior to EW Ulrich Stiller was Commercial Director of EUROWINGS AG, a private owned European regional airline with 44 aircrafts, partner airline in the KLM/Northwest/Alitalia partnership in the 90ies and sold to Lufthansa in 2001. Ulrich's milestone was the introduction of a revenue management based pricing concept with one way fares. He launched the first airline homepage in the www in 1995. The first ticketless travel system in cooperation with SIEMENS was one of his achieved challenges. In 1999, he was appointed as ambassador for innovation in the KL/NW/AZ and partner airline alliance. He began his career in sales/marketing at Singapore Airlines and Continental.
